Restoration of the Selective Microvolteter

Manufactured around 1972.

The instrument is in fully operational condition.

When a small antenna is connected to the input socket, radio-frequency signals can be received and measured across various frequency ranges. The varying signal amplitude is indicated by corresponding movement and fluctuations of the meter pointer. High-impedance headphones may also be connected, allowing the operator to listen to the demodulated signal when measuring amplitude-modulated (AM) transmissions.

Cleaning and Preventive Maintenance

Due to the considerable age of this electronic instrument and the fact that it spent most of its life in storage, where dust accumulation is unavoidable, the restoration process was carried out with exceptional care.

Surface dust and contaminants accumulated during approximately 30 years of storage in a dry indoor warehouse environment were carefully removed using a low-suction vacuum cleaning process.

The silver-plated chassis covers were removed to allow a detailed visual and mechanical inspection of the components mounted within the three-dimensional wiring assembly. Several detailed photographs were taken during the inspection. Afterwards, the covers were reinstalled exactly as originally fitted and securely fastened with their original screws and washers.

The black metal tube shields were carefully removed from their bayonet mounts using a gentle twisting motion and cleaned individually. Each vacuum tube was held with protective gloves while its glass envelope was delicately brushed with a soft brush. Subsequently, each tube was very carefully rotated and tilted slightly (with an offset from its axis of no more than 1–2 mm) to allow the tube pins to self-clean within their sockets. This is an extremely delicate procedure requiring considerable care and experience.

The tube shields were then reinstalled with equal caution, as spring-loaded retainers exert pressure on the tubes. Care was taken to avoid any risk of damage.

A minimal amount of fine lubricant was applied to rotating shafts and friction points where appropriate.

The rotating dial scale was cleaned exclusively with a lightly moistened soft cloth. The glass / plexiglass window was also carefully cleaned from the inside.

The result is remarkable — the instrument now presents itself almost as if it had just left the factory.

Power Cable

The power cable is not original and was most likely replaced many years ago, long before the instrument came into our possession over 40 years ago.

To maintain the authenticity and appearance expected from a measuring instrument of this class, I sourced and installed a suitable high-quality three-conductor cable from imported professional test equipment. The cable is light grey in color, soft, of appropriate diameter and conductor cross-section, and approximately 2 meters in length.

As a result, the instrument is now considerably closer to its original appearance, with a power cable matching the light-grey color scheme of the chassis.

Power Plug

The mains plug was manufactured in the Czech Republic and is of robust, reliable construction.

A Beautiful Vacuum-Tube Instrument

When the selective microvoltmeter is powered on in a completely dark room and viewed from above, the gentle red glow of approximately twelve vacuum-tube heaters can be observed. When changing ranges, the delay tube briefly flashes and activates the relay after approximately one to two seconds, providing a fascinating glimpse into classic German tube engineering.

Now that the instrument has been carefully restored, cleaned, inspected, and preserved, I believe it is ready to be offered to a new owner.

Any serious collector of vintage laboratory equipment, radio-frequency instruments, or classic Rohde & Schwarz technology would be delighted to own such a unique piece of engineering history.
