Tutorial: Improve Your Skills – “Desoldering Through-Hole PCB Mounted Components”

Along with the soldering techniques, while you repair faulty or defective hardware parts, arises the need of using a special “Desoldering technique”.

In pursuit of our main mission, to help hobbyists and people who want to improve their hardware-related skills, we continue to present tutorial videos.

Today We present two videos, showing different desoldering techniques.

  Let’s see the Movies.

 VIDEO 1.  Desoldering Techniques

VIDEO 1.  Using Different Desoldering Techniques

VIDEO 1. – Content:

  • 0:10 sec. – 0:37 sec. Using The Heat Gun Technique.
  • Professional Way:
  • Preparing: The PCB needs to be preheated to about 150 degrees Celsius. Next,  the target IC Chip needs to be quickly and carefully locally heated.
  • The Heating Air Gun Transports the heat to QFN leadless package. When the TIN is melted, quickly with the aid of tweezers separate the IC chip from PCB.
  • 0:39 sec. – 0:52 sec. Desoldering Tweezers,
  • 0:53 sec. – 1:12 min. Desoldering Braid:
    • 1. The PCB Needs to be fixed very well.
    • 2. Applying a small quantity of Flux.
    • 3. With heated Soldering Iron TIP, desoldering braid, and using the capillary effect – the melted solder is soaking into the braid wires, leaving the soldered pin and hole clean, and free of TIN.
  • 1:13 min. – 1:21 min.   Desoldering Mechanical Vacuum Pump. Using desoldering Vacuum Pump requires melting the solder around the soldered pin via Soldering Iron, and very quickly applying the PTFE “nozzle” of the Vacuuming Pump, accompanied by immediately granting the pump’s spring.
  • 1:22 min. – 1:34 min. Compressed air. Everything that can move the melted TIN from solder can be used to desolder. The same is the compressed Air technique. The only disadvantage is a problem with a spreading TIN around the soldered pin and PCB Surface.
  • 1:35 min. – 2:12 min.   Using Cutting Pliers: The Mechanically Pin cutting technique to remove a defective part is also popular. Gently cutting pin-by-pin of small SOT-23 Package, using Cutting Pliers is a kind of challenge. The Pliers need to have thin, zero-cutting “jaws” and the cuttings need to be performed as near the package as possible. In the opposite case, the PCB Pads and related tracks will be damaged.
  • a Skills Required Quick Chip Desoldering Technique:
  • 2:14 min. – 2:59 min. Quick Chip Desoldering.
  • Requirements:
  • A lot of Flux & TIN, Preheated Soldering Iron, and Solid Tweezers.
  • The Way of Usage: Continuously heating the dual lead lines of desoldered Chip with one hand. With Tweezers in another hand is Holding the chip and waiting to melt down both sides TIN.  After that, Pick-upping the Desoldered Chip.
  • 3:00 min. – 3:41 min.  Cleaning: Using Desoldering Braid, and flux paste to soak unnecessary TIN from PCB pads, followed by Isopropyl Alcohol and Brush. This is a “mixture” of chemical dissolving and mechanical cleaning processes. Continued By paper drying.

  • 0:43 sec. – 0:51 sec.  Fast & Easy Single hand Filter Pipe removal. After cleaning, the insertion is intuitively as easy as Pipe’s ejection.
  • 0:52 sec. – 0:55 sec.  A heat adjusting knob numbered from 1 to 4 in a range 350º-500ºC / 660º-930ºF:
    • Step one 350ºC / 660ºF,
    • Step two 400ºC / 750ºF,
    • Step three 450ºC / 840ºF,
    • Step four 500ºC / 930ºF,
  • 0:56 sec. – 0:57 sec.  Calibration Potentiometer.
