In the previous, part 9, we talk about the signal generators.
Today topic will follow another professional option for OUR Hardware Laboratory, namely, The Oscilloscope.
The valuable part of the hobbyists and beginners do not use such professional options for example as a kind of visualizing tool – Oscilloscope.
History and the Evolution of the oscilloscope:
In the past, the oscilloscopes are called an oscillographs, because of their visualizing way was the same as the old style- but and nowadays used seismographers – Continuously drawing with thin nib on the moving paper.
Probably dictated by the low speed of drawing, need of supplies or even some financial reasons and i.e. , next developed visualizing tool was based on the CRO – Cathode Ray Oscilloscope or simply used : “Scope”.
PIC. 1 Symbolical Description of the Oscilloscope Principe of work
The Principe of work is not difficult to understand.
We have a vacuum tube with the gun – electrons emitter – based on heated electrode {PIC.1 – Position 2} and named “Cathode”.
Commonly, The Heating voltage is a low voltage. Only for information: The most popular value of Ucathode = 6.3V AC.
When was applied the heating voltage across the heated cathode, begin the electrons emitting – creating the electron’s ray {PIC.1 – Possition 3} . The tube has an acceleration electrode – called anode: [A] {PIC. 1 – Position 6}.
By applying the High-Voltage on [A] anode in range of 1000 to 10000 V, is creating the described process of acceleration. Because The Plus and Minus are attracting. The Negatively charged Electrons are attracted by The Highly Positive Charged Anode Electrode .
Over the neck of the Vacuum Tube is inserted a coil for focusing ( compacting the size of beam) the ray {PIC.1 – Possition 4}.
The Electrostatic Deflection system was created via two pairs of Flat electrodes, placed perpendicularly {PIC.1 – Possition 1}.
The vacuum tube has and a screen – the flat finishes internally covered with the Phosphor. When the accelerated electrons ray is hitting in the layer of phosphor, it is emitting the light {PIC.1 – Possition 5}.
Conclusion:
For Hobby and semi-professional usage variant of 50 – 100 MHz bandwidth – two channels with external triggering option and 1 – 3 Gs is completely enough.
DSO – Digital Storage Oscilloscope: The digital storage option, actually is a professional grade option.
More details can get from the links below:
The Beginner’s Option: You can check your Hardware skills and to create by your hands Digital Scope, using DSO138 – KIT.
The KIT includes Two PCB, LCD screen and a lot of components. The integral circuit with the Smallest Pin-Pitch is soldered on the PCB at the factory and is done to you.
More details can get from the link below:
DSO138: 2-Channel DSO with Color Display
For Advanced Users , there is cool pocket sized 4-channel Digital Storage Oscilloscope
More details about the device, you can get from the link below:
Other kind of Digital Storing Oscilloscope is PC based Module commonly known as Digitizer.
The Digitizers can be with different Bandwidth and count of the channels, also with the different possibility of Real-time displaying signals on the screen.
But they don’t have a screen. You need to connect the digitizer’s device to PC , commonly via USB interface.
